25' Boston Whaler Coated with Marine 31 Captain's Boat Coating
My neighbor Ozzie recently purchased this beautiful Boston Whaler. He got it used but in great condition, except some of the gel coat needed attention. The haul had been previously buffed out before he got the boat and was in good condition so we focused on everything above the haul and inside of the boat.
Hard to see from this picture but the white gel coat above the haul had no shine and was dull. 1st step was to wash the boat. Since we were using Marine 31 products, we used Marine 31 Gel Coat Wash & Wax with Carnuba. Perhaps Marine 31 should come out with a stronger wash without wax for when preparing for wetsanding, compounding and polishing (hint, hint ). Here's Ozzie using a foam gun to apply the wash. A boars hair brush works good for cleaning boats. The Ultimate Guzzler Waffle Weave Towel makes quick work of drying the boat. Non-skid areas were cleaned with Marine 31 Port to Starboard All Purpose Cleaner and a brush attached to a Porter Cable polisher. The APC bottle fell and broke so we put the remaining APC in a generic spray bottle. Non-skid area cleaned on the left side. For the wet sanding process, we decided to go with the Mirka Abralon 1000, 2000 & 3000 sanding discs, in that order. In some areas we were able to get by with just using 2000 and then 3000 and then compounding and polishing. Machine wet sanding using the Porter Cable and sanding disc. Using the Griots Garage Mini on tight areas with a 3" sanding disc. Getting into some tight areas by hand using a Nanoskin Hand Strap Applicator and sanding disc. After the sanding, it was compounded using Captain's One-Step Compound & Polish. We used a combination of the Marine 31 7.5" White Twisted Wool Pad and the Yellow Wood Pad on rotary buffers. Ozzie used his HF Rotary and I used my Flex PE14 Rotary. Using the Flex PE8 and a small wool pad for those tight areas. For the final polishing step, we used the Flex 3401 dual action polisher with a Rupes UHS Pad and the same Captain's Compound & Polish. This helped to remove the majority of the swirls marks left by the rotary and wool pads. After the final polishing step the boat was wiped down with Marine 31 APC to remove any polish residue before applying the coating. The Marine 31 Captain's boat coating was then applied. Marine 31 Mildew Remover and Mildew Guard was applied to the seats and cushions. Marine 31 Non-Skid Clear Sealant with Carnauba was applied to the non-skid after cleaning. Some final beauty shots, you can now see a reflection where before there was none. |

Stellar work Frank!
Plus your process and pictures are truly a text book example of the proper way to restore a severely oxidized gel-coat finish. Excellent work and thank you for sharing!
