*NEW* Marine 31 Gel Coat Heavy-Cut Cleaner Wax
You talked and we listened! Introducing Marine 31 Gel Coat Heavy-Cut Cleaner Wax - the best boat cleaner wax money can buy.
http://autogeekonline.net/nick/Summe...0cut%20wax.jpg We have received an overwhelming amount of requests for a heavy cut cleaner wax since Marine 31 launched last March; needless to say we've been hard at work the last few months developing this product. With the new Gel Coat Heavy-Cut Cleaner Wax, we've essentially eliminated the need for a two-step compound and wax for most applications. Quote:

Today I did my testing with Marine 31 Heavy Cut Cleaner Wax. The product was all you could want in a one step cut, polish and protect. I used my Griot's machine on speed 4 with the backing plate provided by them and a 6 inch lake country blue hybrid wool pad. Using an over lapping thatch pattern I did the usual 2x2 section with medium hand speed and pressure. After three passes the surface was back to a like new condition. As you can see all of the staining and oxidation is gone. The Rv I was working on was not heavily oxidized but one thing you run into in my industry of high volume Rv and Boat reconditioning is the need for good results in minimal time, and this did just that. I did notice that it was best to wipe off as you go instead of doing a large section and coming back, seeing as it was a harder to wipe off when left to dwell. This might have been because of weather it was cold Florida day. I will give and update on that when I have a chance to work with it in real Florida conditions. Any way I much prefer to wipe as I go just to make sure everything is being done properly. Over all I think this product is great and I look forward to further use and testing in a more high volume atmosphere.

Re: *NEW* Marine 31 Gel Coat Heavy-Cut Cleaner Wax
I just ordered the Heavy Cut Cleaner Wax and think I may have ordered the wrong applicator. I ended up choosing this foam pad:
LC-WP-24650-X - 6.5 Inch Lake Country Waffle Pro Orange My boat is about 14 years old but has been maintained reasonably well. It sits in the water year round and the bow gets sun much of the day so I always have a little oxidation to deal with in the spring. I like the idea of an all-in-one product if it really works so I have high hopes for this product. I'm planning to apply with a Griots 6" DA. Should I have gone with a wool pad, or the foamed wool pads instead? |

Try a test spot and see how that combination works for you. If you're happy with the results, then get to work! If not, then you'll want to order a couple of the 6.5 inch Foamed Wool pads. :thumb: |

That's my plan since UPS just notified me the stuff should be here tomorrow. I'm planning to head to the boat this weekend to give it a whirl. But for education purposes, why would I choose one (foam) over the other (wool)? Does it boil down to wool cuts better? If that's the case, then what tradeoff is there to using wool? In other words, why wouldn't I just use wool all the time? |
Re: *NEW* Marine 31 Gel Coat Heavy-Cut Cleaner Wax
Wool cuts better but foam finishes better. The whole concept of a cleaner wax is to be able to do the job in one step. Purple foamed wool finishes really nice but I have had issues with pads coming apart. The blue foamed wool holds up really well but sometimes the finish isn't as nice.

Re: *NEW* Marine 31 Gel Coat Heavy-Cut Cleaner Wax
I did a few test spots today with the orange pad on my Griots machine. I'm happy but I don't think I got the best results possible from my gelcoat.
I need help deciding if I should use the same product with a wool pad, or if I'm expecting too much from an AIO product. The finish looked good, maybe even really good. But it didn't look quite as deep as I was hoping...maybe a look that can only be achieved through a multi step process?? I don't mind testing a few things before committing to an entire process. It's a 40' boat so whatever I do is going to take some time!! |

Gel Coat Heavy-Cut Cleaner Wax paired with a rotary polisher equipped with a wool pad is capable of removing some pretty nasty oxidation and staining. If you don't want to invest in a new machine, consider borrowing one from a friend. |
Re: *NEW* Marine 31 Gel Coat Heavy-Cut Cleaner Wax
I have a rotary machine now. I just don't like using it much. I guess I can give it a try with wool pads on the rotary and give it a whirl.

Post some full sun pics so we can get a good idea what your working with.

Re: *NEW* Marine 31 Gel Coat Heavy-Cut Cleaner Wax
I'll definitely post some pics. But I always find it hard to capture in a photo what I see with the naked eye. It seems that everything looks better in pictures.
Honestly the finish is not bad. And I have to admit I was impressed with the results from this cleaner/wax AIO product. I can imagine getting my whole boat done in one very long day or two reasonable length days over a weekend which is amazing. When I bought the boat in 2010 I had it professionally buffed/waxed and those guys made it look awesome. I've never been able to get it back to that look on my own since then... |

With wool pads, the key to making it easy to buff is to clean your pads often using a steel pad cleaning spur and this is especially true when buffing oxidized gel-coats. When buffing oxidized gel-coats you have two things building up on the face of the pad, 1. Oxidized gel-coatIf you don't clean this gunk off the face of the buffing pad after buffing each section or so it will make buffing new of fresh product more difficult. You'll find the buffing pad will tend to grab the gel-coat surface and jerk you around or try to hop around, called buffer hop. Clean the pad often and this will dramatically reduce these characteristics. Also, if you don't clean your pad to other unwanted things happen... 1. You dilute the strength of the fresh product because you're mixing it with used-up or spent product. Not sure where you live but last Thursday we did a rotary buffer only buff-out on a 1990 Corvette using compounds and polishes. While this is not a boat, I did go over a lot of tips and techniques for how to use a rotary buffer and these same tips and technique apply to using a rotary buffer on a boat. 1990 Corvette - Extreme Makeover Pictures & Process http://www.autogeekonline.net/galler...illips_033.jpg http://www.autogeekonline.net/galler...illips_034.jpg http://www.autogeekonline.net/galler...illips_036.jpg http://www.autogeekonline.net/galler...illips_037.jpg http://www.autogeekonline.net/galler...illips_038.jpg :thumb: |
Re: *NEW* Marine 31 Gel Coat Heavy-Cut Cleaner Wax
If your going to use the griots machine try getting the blue hybrid wool pads. You can polish once with the wool and the go over again with the foam. I usually run on speed 5 and have had great results doing four thatched passes, wiping off and going at it again with foam.

Re: *NEW* Marine 31 Gel Coat Heavy-Cut Cleaner Wax
I was thinking of doing something like that...then I realized if I'm going to do two passes over everything, I may as well use my rotary with a proper wool pad and a straight up compound then come back around with polish/wax.

Any pics of your work Interactive?

Re: *NEW* Marine 31 Gel Coat Heavy-Cut Cleaner Wax
I never took any pics after I cleaned up in the spring. The finish is still looking pretty good and cleaning up well. I'm thinking of going over the most exposed areas again as a preventative measure.

And just to note... The Griot's dual action polisher comes stock with a 6" backing plate. The Lake Country Blue Hybrid Pads are 6" in diameter. So be careful that you don't gouge the edge of the backing plate into anything when buffing. With a 5" backing plate there's a little extra backing material surrounding the backing plate. :) |
